How cat years really work
Cats do most of their growing up almost immediately. A six-month-old kitten is already around 10 human years, a one-year-old cat is about 15, and by their second birthday they are roughly 24: a young adult.
After that, feline aging is remarkably steady. Every cat year adds about 4 human years, so a 10-year-old cat is around 56 and an 18-year-old is around 88. Unlike dogs, breed makes no difference: every cat follows the same curve.
This is the standard veterinary convention published by International Cat Care and attributed to the American Veterinary Medical Association. It replaced the multiply-by-seven rule decades ago.

How do you calculate a cat's age in human years?
A cat's first year counts as about 15 human years, the second brings them to about 24, and every year after that adds about 4 more. This is the standard veterinary convention from International Cat Care and the AVMA.
Why is my six-month-old kitten shown as about 10 human years?
Cats grow up fast. A kitten reaches near-adult size and maturity well before its first birthday, so six months already maps to roughly 10 human years, not a small number.
Does breed matter for cats?
No. Unlike dogs, cats are treated the same regardless of breed, because no feline age-to-human chart varies by breed. A Maine Coon and a Siamese of the same age get the same number.
When does a cat become a senior?
Veterinary life-stage guidelines consider cats mature from about 7 and senior from about 11. Many cats live well into their late teens, which maps to 80 or more human years.
Why isn't my cat's human age just its age times seven?
The multiply-by-seven rule was retired by veterinarians decades ago. Cats age quickly in their first two years and then settle into a steady 4 human years per year, so a straight multiplier does not fit.

The chart follows International Cat Care's canonical conversion, which PetMD attributes to the American Veterinary Medical Association: 15 at one year, 24 at two, then 4 human years per cat year.
